Box Score 2 The LeTourneau University baseball swept a doubleheader from Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon at Conrad-Vernon Field, 3-1 and 19-10.

The YellowJackets (3-0) out hit the Pirates in both games en route to the doubleheader sweep. In game one, it was a masterful performance on the mound by junior
Cody Whitley and in the nightcap, it was an offensive explosion in another come-from-behind win.

Game 1
In game one, LeTourneau starting pitcher
Cody Whitley went the entire seven innings for the complete game win. He allowed just three hits and struck out six in the contest.

Whitley got two runs of support in the second and an insurance run in the fifth. In the second inning, with the bases loaded,
Micah Montes hit a ground ball that was misplayed by the Pirates to plate two runs. The YellowJackets added an insurance run when
Sean Sellers hit a solo homerun in the fifth.

The lone run for Southwestern came in the seventh after a two-out double by Charlie St. Clair. He came around to score after consecutive wild pitches by Whitley. However, the Dickinson, Texas native closed the door on the complete game with a strikeout.

Game 2
In the nightcap, LeTourneau rallied from a 4-0 deficit after the first inning and a half. The YellowJackets gradually worked away at the deficit, scoring a run in the second and third innings to cut the deficit to 4-2 before erupting for a run in the sixth, three in the fifth, four runs in the fourth and eighth innings, five in the seventh. Offensively, in both the seventh and eighth inning, LeTourneau batted around.

LeTourneau finished the contest with 19 hits –
Sean Sellers had a team-high four hits to go along with three RBI. Three YellowJackets had three hits –
Bryce Griffin,
Ryan Bertram and
Jared O'Neal. Griffin also had four RBI.
Chris Bertram and
Kyle Jacobs each added two hits to the attack and the lone hit for
Garrett Methvin was a solo homerun that cleared the right-field scoreboard in the fifth inning. All nine starters had a hit and scored a run to contribute to the win.

YellowJackets starting pitcher
Justin Jenkins went five innings for his first win, scattering 10 hits and striking out two as LeTourneau utilized five pitchers in the contest.

Southwestern University had 14 hits but was victim to eight errors on the defensive side of the ledger. Charlie St. Clair went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI; plus Clayton Sparks went 3-for-5 with four RBI to pace the Pirates attack.

Pirates starting pitcher Matt LItz went 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs – four earned and a strikeout in the loss.

The YellowJackets will begin the rigors of the American Southwest Conference with a 6 p.m. contest against Louisiana College on Friday at 6 p.m. at Conrad-Vernon Field. The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a 1 p.m. twinbill. Prior to the game on Saturday, fans are encouraged to stop by for free hot dogs on Saturday in the Solheim Arena parking lot.
