YellowJacket Men's Tennis Defeats Louisiana College and Texas-Dallas

LeTourneau University men's tennis swept both of its matches to begin American Southwest Conference play on Saturday. The YellowJackets started the day with a 9-0 win over Louisiana College and followed that up with a 6-3 win over Texas-Dallas, who had been picked to finish second in the conference.

The YellowJackets (3-1) started the day with a rout of the Wildcats as all three doubles teams won and they swept through the singles without giving up a set. Junior Kendall Beggs at No. 1 singles and freshman Ty Grove at No. 6 singles failed to surrender a point in their straight-set wins.

Against the Comets, it was a complete team effort to knock off Texas-Dallas said head coach Suzanne Merritt.

"We set a goal to take two out of three lines of doubles against UT-Dallas, earlier this week," said Merritt. "I felt we worked hard to achieve that goal, today." LeTourneau won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles in the 6-3 win over Texas-Dallas.

Sindre Johnsgaard extended his winning streak to five in a row with a 6-0, 7-6 win at No. 3 singles over Henry Henk. Another key victory for LeTourneau in the match was at No. 5 singles where sophomore Morgan Weaver defeated Guil Portela, 6-2, 6-4 to end a four-match losing streak. Johnsgaard and Weaver teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles for an 8-5 victory over Henk and Sean Spiesmsan.

"We had many valuable contributions throughout our lineup including consistent play by Kendall as well as an the emotional win by Sindre and solid play by both Morgan and Michael in their singles matches," said Merritt.

Also recording wins were the YellowJackets' junior Kendall Beggs at No. 1 singles over Casey Clark, 6-0, 6-4, who in the fall won the No. 1 singles flight at the ASC Individual Championships. LeTourneau sophomore Michael McLaughlin won a three-set match over Spiesman at No. 4 singles, 7-6, 3-6, 7-5.

LeTourneau will be back in action on Saturday, March 1 when they host Hendrix College at 9 a.m. at the Davis Tennis Courts.
