LeTourneau Seniors Send YellowJackets into the ASC Tournament with 81-54 Win Over Sul Ross State

Box Score The LeTourneau University women's basketball team punched its ticket to the ASC Tournament with an 81-54 win over Sul Ross State on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.

The YellowJackets (9-14, 8-13 ASC) secured a spot in next weekend's ASC Tournament with the win and the win by Concordia over Hardin-Simmons earlier in the day. A key factor in the win for LeTourneau was its four seniors – Ashley Fajardo, Julencia Curtis, Jessica Manas and Alexis Wighaman – who all scored in double digits. Wighaman and Curtis each had a double double in the win. Wighaman had a game-high 17 points and 16 rebounds to lead LeTourneau; plus, Curtis had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Manas scored 11 points and nearly had a double double with nine boards and Fajardo added 11.

The Lobos (1-23, 0-21 ASC) were led by the 14-point effort from Rhiana Michou in the loss.

"What a great showing today by four class act young ladies," said LeTourneau head women's basketball coach Corey Thomaston. "Our seniors have meant so much to this program and I could not be more excited for them and what they've been able to accomplish. This was a great team effort today but the spotlight being on the four seniors shined brightly today."

The taller LeTourneau squad outrebounded Sul Ross State by a 74-26 advantage and recorded a 54-8 advantage on points in the paint. Plus, they registered a 27-1 margin on second-chance points.

After an early field goal by SRSU gave the visiting Lobos an early 2-0 lead, eight unanswered points by the YellowJackets put them up for the remainder of the contest. LeTourneau scored eight of the final 12 points of the first half for a 36-25 lead and its first double-digit lead of the game. A 13-3 run by the host YellowJackets to start the second half kept the Lobos from drawing any closer.

"We are excited about continuing to move this program forward. I am so very proud of their effort today," said Thomaston. LeTourneau had 13-different players contribute to the scoring in the win.

The YellowJackets will play its third game in five days on Monday, when they travel to Marshall to face local rival East Texas Baptist in its final regular season game at 5:30 p.m.
