Box Score 2 LeTourneau University and No. 16 Concordia split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Conrad-Vernon Field. The YellowJackets won game one, 2-1, before dropping the nightcap, 1-0.
In both games, it was timely hitting that overruled strong starting pitchers from both teams. Both games were decided in the final inning. LeTourneau scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for the come-from-behind win in the opener. The Tornados scored the only run of the nightcap in the ninth for the victory.
Game 1
The two teams were scoreless until the fifth when Concordia scored the first run of the afternoon on a balk by LeTourneau starting pitcher
Curt Copeland. The senior from West Palm Beach, Fla. was in control throughout the game, allowing just three hits and striking out six for the win. The win raises Copeland's record to 3-2 on the season.
Facing an 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the seventh,
Ryan Bertram was hit by a pitch. Next,
Garrett Methvin doubled to right field to put runners on second and third for
Dillon Yates.
Yates hit a ground ball to third which an alert Kyle Rodriguez tagged Bertram, who was running at third to put runners on first and second on the fielder's choice. Then, LeTourneau head coach
Robin Harriss elected to bring in some speed off the bench in pinchrunners,
Jon Riley at second for Methvin and
Jordan Argabright at first for Yates.
With one out,
Chris Bertram singled to center field to tie the game at 1, scoring Riley from second. Then,
Micah Montes walked to load the bases for
Kyle Jacobs.
The freshman second baseman took the first pitch from reliever Ryan Jacobs between right and center field, scoring Argabright to third for the game-winning run. It was the second come-from-behind win of the season for the YellowJackets, who took the series opener against Louisiana College in comeback fashion.
Game 2
Three double plays by visiting Concordia allowed the Tornados to overcome 11 runners left on base in a 1-0 win in game two over the YellowJackets.
Concordia (18-3, 14-2 ASC) got its only run in the top of the ninth without a hit. A Brandon Hollier sacrifice fly proved to be the difference.
The YellowJackets (18-6, 12-5 ASC) had threats wiped out in the first, second and ninth as well as they stranded a runner on third in the sixth and another at second in the third and eighth inning.
The loss overshadowed the strong pitching performances by
Cody Whitley for LeTourneau, who pitched 6.2 innings, striking out six and walking three in a no decision.
Jordan Price was the tough-luck loser, despite allowing just two hits in two innings of work. Concordia starter Scott Weinscheck allowed five hits and struck out two in eight innings of work for the win. Trey Pledger pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
In the top of the ninth, the first two Tornados reached base to put runners on first and second. After a foul out, Concordia executed a double steal to put runners on second and third which set the stage for the sacrifice fly by Hollier.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a final game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Conrad-Vernon Field.
