YellowJackets Set New Records in Doubleheader Sweep of Schreiner

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The LeTourneau University softball team began its final home stand of the 2014 season today with a doubleheader sweep of non-conference foe, Schreiner University.  Game one ended with a score of 8-0 in 6 innings with game two going the distance for a score of 5-1.

The YellowJackets (14-20) had 10 hits in each game to supplement strong pitching from seniors Taylor Thibodeaux in game one and Kelli Parton in game two.

The game one victory gave LETU senior Taylor Thibodeaux career win No. 31 to make her the all-time winningest pitcher in program history. The win was career victory No. 52 for head coach Kate Bell-Keierleber to make her the all-time winningest coach in softball school history.

Game 1

A solo home run by sophomore Megan Hill in the bottom of the first, set the stage for the YellowJackets. Hill finished the contest 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while teammate, freshman Whitney Judd went 2-for-2 with three runs scored.

The duo gave ample offensive support to Thibodeaux, who allowed just two hits and struck out five in the win to raise her record to 7-5. Schreiner never got a runner past first base in the contest.

With a 1-0 lead in the third inning, Hill drove in Judd, who had tripled to the gap in right-center field for a 2-0 advantage. The YellowJackets scored three times on three hits in the fifth and sixth innings to complete the run-rule victory.

Game 2
After giving up a run in the first, LeTourneau scored the next five runs to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 5-1 win.

Senior Anna Winter, freshman Nikki Hebert and freshman Courtney Matulis each had two hits to lead the YellowJacket offense. Senior Kelli Parton pitched a complete game, scattering three hits, striking out three in the win for LeTourneau.

In the bottom of the third, senior Chloe Cooper reached base on a fielder's choice, then stole second.   Trailing 1-0, senior Jourdan Glover doubled down the left-field line, scoring Cooper to tie the game at 1-1.   Next, Winter brought in Glover on a double, to put LeTourneau ahead 2-1. After a ground out, Matulis reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners. The YellowJackets then successfully pulled off a double steal to score Winter from third and plate the third run of the inning for a 3-1 lead.

LeTourneau added a run each in the fifth and sixth inning to complete the doubleheader sweep.

The YellowJackets will host Mississippi College in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, April 18 at 4 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear blue as part of Autism Awareness Month.
