The LeTourneau University men's and women's tennis teams have secured a spot at the 2014 ASC Tennis Championships Friday-Sunday (April 25-27) at the Summers Tennis Center in Tyler, Texas.
"Reaching the conference tournament is a great accomplishment and direct result of our hard work this year," said head coach
Suzanne Merritt. "My players fought hard in every match this season to achieve their individual and team goals. This is a talented and motivated group of players and it is an honor to work with them every day. I am extremely proud of each of them."
The YellowJacket men (13-6 overall, 7-3 ASC) will enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed and play the No. 4 seed Hardin Simmons (10-10 overall, 7-3 ASC) at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Like the men, the LeTourneau women (8-11, overall and 5-5 ASC) will enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed and play the No. 4 seed Hardin Simmons (7-11 overall, 6-4 ASC) at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
"We will be facing a very good team in Hardin-Simmons University in the first round," said Merritt. "I believe my players are ready and looking forward to this challenge."
This year's ASC Championship marks the 18th in league history dating back to 1997. In the men's tournament, Hardin Simmons leads with seven conference championships including six consecutive (2002-07). Hardin-Simmons also leads the women's tournament with nine league titles including seven consecutive (2001-07). The Texas-Tyler men's and women's teams have won five of the last six ASC Championships. Hardin Simmons (16) and Texas-Tyler (10) rank first and second, respectively, in number of combined conference championships.
The men's and women's ASC champions will each earn the conference's automatic bids into their respective NCAA Division III Tennis Championships.
The NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Championship will be held at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif. The NCAA team selections will be released May 5 with the individual selections coming May 7. The NCAA team championship will be from May 19-21 with the individual championship is scheduled from May 22-24.
