Tennis Crowns Champions at ASC Fall Invitational

ABILENE, Texas -- LeTourneau University men's tennis team crowned two singles champions, while four others were runner-up at the American Southwest Conference Fall Invitational Saturday. The YellowJackets also won a doubles title.

Julian Lee and Miles Grubbs each won singles bracket titles. Lee paired up with Jonah McGinty to capture a doubles championship.

"I'm very excited about our results this weekend," LETU coach Suzanne Merritt said. "For the first tournament, we competed well, and won some tough matches. We got to see some things we need to work on for this year, and we are motivated to get to work."

Lee won the E flight championship, beating Concordia Texas' Michael Davis, 6-3, 6-1. Grubbs beat Hardin-Simmons' Davyn Williford, 6-2, 6-2, to capture the J flight championship.

Christian Farris was the runner-up in the B flight after falling to Concordia's Robin Van Der Heijden, 7-5, 6-2. In the C draw championship, Nathan Schmidt fell to Concordia's Esteban Arredondo, 6-3, 6-0. Rodrigo Vazquez Chairez lost to Hardin-Simmons' Josh Lopez, 7-6 (7-0), 6-4, in the D flight title match. Jeffrey Golladay was the runner-up in the H draw after falling in an exciting third-set super tiebreaker final to Concordia Texas' Riley O'Connor, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.

Jimmie Henson won the A flight consolation title after beating Schreiner's Luis Cabrera, 8-2.

In the G draw, Paulo Cressio defeated St. Thomas' Jace Ware, 9-8 (7-3), in the third place match. In the I bracket, Gavin Meyer beat McMurry's Dylan Sisouphanh, 8-3, for third place.

In the K bracket consolation finals, Collin Patterson defeated McMurry's Dylan Bryant, 8-4. Patterson was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over East Texas Baptist's Colton Berryhill in the semifinals. McGinty beat Mary Hardin-Baylor's Ty Marshall, 8-0, for third place in the K flight. In the L draw, James Langley beat McMurry's Manuel Rodriguez, 9-8 (7-5), in the consolation finals. He defeated teammate Larry Torres, 6-3, 7-5, in the semifinals.

Lee and McGinty won the C flight doubles title, beating Davis and Pena of Concordia, 8-5. 

Henson and Farris lost to Concordia's Bode and Van Der Heijden, 6-4, in the third place match of the A flight. In the D draw third place match, Cressio and Meyer defeated Schreiner's Johns and Ueckert, 6-1. Golladay and Grubbs beat Schreiner's Govea and Tiernan, 6-1, in the E flight third place match. Schmidt and Vazquez Chairez beat Howard Payne's Benitez and Hunter, 6-2, in the consolation round third place match of the B bracket. 

In the women's singles A flight, LeTourneau's Maddison Brackenreg defeated Schreiner's Jennifer Garcia, 8-4, in the consolation finals. Brackenreg beat ETBU's Ashley Schenck, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals.

Summer Apostalo lost to McMurry's Morgan Parnell, 6-2, 6-3, in the consolation semifinals of the C draw. She beat Mary Hardin-Baylor's Amanda Almanza, 8-3. Samantha Trevino lost to Schreiner's Kate Los Santos, 8-3, in the B flight consolation. 

Mimi Samdi beat Mary Hardin-Baylor's Reilly Fletcher, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6), in the E flight consolation semifinals. She lost to Schreiner's Victoria Morales, 8-2, in the consolation finals. Savannah Orton lost to St. Thomas' Anna Ta, 8-4, in the consolation bracket of the F flight. Sierra Giesen Linssen fell to East Texas Baptist's Corinne Hall, 6-2, 6-1, in the consolation semifinals of the D bracket.

Amber Van Duyn lost to Schreiner's Lindsey Reynolds, 8-4, in the G draw. In the H bracket, Hannah Moore fell to Concordia's Veronica Gutierrez, 8-5. In the I bracket, Sophie Hill lost McMurry's Kylie Long, 8-0. 

In pairs play, Brackenreg and Apostalo fell to Garcia and Los Santos, 6-0, in the A draw consolation finals. LETU's duo beat UHMB's Rendon and Galligan, 6-3, in the consolation semifinals. They lost to ETBU's Schenck and Wilcoxson, 6-2.

In the B flight, Trevino and Orton lost to Hardin-Simmons' Hathorn and Schimming, 6-0. Trevino and Orton lost to Almanza and Torres Diaz of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 7-5, in the consolation round. In the C draw, Hill and Van Duyn lost to Concordia's Sweitzer and Goodman, 6-0. The YellowJackets duo fell to UHMB's Fletcher and Anderson, 6-3, in the consolation side of the bracket. Samdi and Moore lost to McMurry's Duke and Taryn, 6-2, in the E flight.

The women's team will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Regional next weekend in Abilene. The YellowJackets men's team will compete in the ITA regionals Sept. 26-29 in Georgetown, Texas.
