RESULTS

ABILENE, Texas -- LeTourneau University's Amber Van Duyn won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Region women's D bracket singles championship Saturday.

Van Duyn, a freshman from Corpus Christi, Texas, beat Austin College's second-seeded Lily Schubert, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2, to win the title.

"I would say I was able to be successful this weekend because my teammates were there to cheer me on," Van Duyn said. "We became closer as a family. Our coaches helped push me through my final and my tiebreaker. I want to thank my teammates and my coaches for pushing me through my final match. It was so much better. I was so much happier and more cheerful about it all."

In the semifinals, Van Duyn breezed past Concordia Texas' Veronica Gutierrez, 6-1, 6-1.

"It was nerve wracking at first because you know what to expect, but it's a higher level of tennis," she said. "It's really great because you can put your time into it and still get results out of it in the end. I think this fall season has helped me realize what I need to work on to get ready for the spring."

Van Duyn went 4-0 at the regional, winning two matches in each of her two days on the court.

"We had a good weekend with a lot of great match play," YellowJackets coach Suzanne Merritt said. "I'm proud of the determination and competitiveness of this team, and can't wait to see what they do in the spring."
