Grubbs Clinches ITA Region Consolation Championship

RESULTS

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- LeTourneau University men's tennis newcomer Miles Grubbs won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association B singles consolation championship Sunday at Southwestern University.

Grubbs defeated Hardin-Simmons' third-seeded Davyn Williford, 6-3, 6-2, to win the consolation bracket.

"It's been a solid weekend," Grubbs said. "The competition is difficult and challenging. It means that I'm going to have to keep working and to keep improving. I had to be super focused and consistent. It's been super, super fun, and it's been a grind."

Grubbs, a freshman from Aledo, Texas, went 4-1 in singles play over the weekend. He also beat Williford to win the American Southwest Conference Fall Invitational J flight singles title two weeks earlier. Grubbs went 1-1 in doubles play in Georgetown.

"Miles has demonstrated he can play at that level," YellowJackets assistant coach Carlos Cardona said. "I think he brings a lot of maturity. He's very, very focused. He brings a lot of experience as a freshman, and it tells a lot about his competitive skills. A lot of times, these tournaments are an eye-opener for these kids, but he shows a lot of maturity. He likes the competition, likes that pressure. He feeds off the pressure, and he performs very well. A lot of kids crack under pressure, and they don't handle it very well. He does the opposite. He thrives under pressure."

The YellowJackets wrapped up the fall season, and will begin preparing for the spring dual season.

"As a team, it's a good omen carrying into the season," Cardona said. "It tells them where they need to be. It gives them confidence going into the spring semester."
