DALLAS – LeTourneau University women's basketball team will compete in the MCM Elegante Hotel Dallas Christian College Christmas Classic Tuesday-Thursday.
The YellowJackets will meet Texas A&M-Texarkana 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sul Ross State 1 p.m. Wednesday and host Dallas Christian 3 p.m. Thursday. It is the only in-season tournament of the year for LeTourneau.
LETU (1-1) is coming off a 67-64 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor at home on Dec. 18. It was LETU's first regular season game since Nov. 24. Texas A&M-Texarkana (1-5) picked up its lone win over Dallas Christian, a 92-42 victory on Nov. 23. Sul Ross State (1-4) dropped its last game, a 77-54 verdict at Hardin-Simmons on Dec. 16. Dallas Christian is 1-4, following a 76-54 loss to Baptist Bible (Mo.) on Dec. 11.
LeTourneau's
Keauna Whitfield is averaging 17.5 points, seven rebounds, four steals and 3.5 assists. Her four steals per game is tied for the tops in the American Southwest Conference.
Malacia Guy is averaging 15.5 points and eight boards.
Scruffy Hopkins is good for 10.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Kyndall Hardeman is scoring nine points, while shooting 52.9 percent from the floor, and
Flora Akingbade is putting up an ASC-leading 13.5 rebounds per game, while scoring 6.5 points and coming up with two steals.
Despite playing in just two games, Texarkana's Taylor Hardin leads the Eagles in scoring at 14.5 points per game, while shooting .588 from the field and .538 from three-point range. Mi'Lan Francis-Miller is averaging 11.2 points and two steals per game. Taylor Howell is scoring 9.8 points per game, while shooting 42.9 percent from the 3-point line. Yasmine Arogunjo is pulling down a team-best six boards per game, while scoring 6.2.
SRSU's Alexis Carmosino is averaging 12.8 points and 9.8 rebounds, while shooting 51.2 percent from the field. Vania Hampton is putting up double-double numbers in points (11.4) and rebounds (11.0). Keona Loftis is a deep threat for the Lobos as she has canned 45.5 percent of her triple tries on the way to a 9.2 points per game scoring norm. Cassie Hogan and Teresa Quintana are both good for nine points per game.
Dallas Christian's Gabby Garza is putting up 15 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 50 percent from the floor. Courtnee Locke is averaging 11 points and 4.8 steals. Avery Roberts is scoring 11 points, and has come away with three steals per game. Mckayla Washington is averaging nine points, and Daizja Jolly 7.3.
LeTourneau will return home Jan. 7 to host Hardin-Simmons in the ASC opener.
TOURNEY TIDBITS
LeTourneau went 1-1 in its holiday tournament last season … The Jackets were 2-4 in regular season tournaments a year ago.
SERIES HISTORY
The Jackets will meet Texas A&M-Texarkana for the first time in program history … LETU is 14-9 against Sul Ross State, which includes a 10-2 mark since 2009 … The YellowJackets won last year's meeting after dropping the previous two … LeTourneau is 7-0 all time against Dallas Christian … The Jackets beat the Crusaders, 72-52, in 2018, also in Dallas.
