MBB travels to Brownwood and Alpine

LONGVIEW, Texas – The LETU men's basketball team heads west, opening the second half of the 2021-22 American Southwest Conference slate with a four-game road trip, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Howard Payne in Brownwood, Texas.
 
GAME 17 – at Howard Payne (4-12, 3-8)

After a comeback win over UT Dallas Monday, the YellowJackets are tied atop the league standing with UMHB. Both squads enter the homestretch with identical 12-2 overall records, including 7-2 against conference foes.
 
LETU escaped with an 81-80, win in the first meeting this season, despite holding a 17-point second half lead. A three pointer from Andrew Eberhardt gave the YellowJackets their biggest margin with 17:04 remaining in the contest at 52-35.
 
Jerren Godfrey sank both free-throws with 11 seconds left, pushing Howard Payne in front 80-79, the Yellow Jackets first advantage of the day.
 
Deonte Jackson received the inbounds pass and drove the length of the court, finishing at the hoop with four ticks showing. His layup was the first of three game winners in the final five seconds for LETU this season, all coming at home.
 
HPU snapped a five-game losing skid with a 75-60, home triumph over Hardin-Simmons Thursday, Jan. 13. The Yellow Jackets fell 1255-112 in triple overtime to McMurry Saturday, Jan. 15.

In the conference opener for the YellowJackets, Jackson led all scorers with 22 points in the 67-58, win over Sul Ross State Dec. 2, 2021. Warren Richardson added 16 points, 15 rebounds and Eberhardt chipped in with 15 points and 11 boards.
 
The Lobos built a seven-point advantage, their larges of the game with 11:50 left in the opening period. LETU responded by outscoring its opponent by 21 over the next 19 minutes of game time, holding the largest lead of the contest at 45-31, at the 13:23 mark of the second half.
 
With the victory, the YellowJackets take a four-game winning streak against the Lobos into Saturday's contest.
 
Sul Ross State is 2-3 in its last five games, including an 81-79, triumph over Hardin-Simmons Saturday, Jan. 15, in Alpine.
