ABILENE, Texas --
Andres Urrutia collected four singles wins and the LeTourneau men's tennis team capped its fall season with a strong showing at the ITA Southwest Regional on Sept. 29-Oct. 2 in Abilene.
The YellowJackets piled up 12 singles wins in the tournament and two more in doubles play.
After dropping his first match of the tournament, Urrutia bounced back and took the title in a consolation bracket and went 4-1 overall. The sophomore moved past opponents from East Texas Baptist, Hardin-Simmons, and Mary Hardin-Baylor. In a semifinal win over UMHB's Charles Paquin, Urrutia outlasted the conference foe 6-3, 7-6(2). In the final against Andre Maltzahn of UMHB, Urrutia narrowly fell in the opening set (6-7) before rallying for 6-3, 10-8 victory.
LeTourneau also notched a pair of wins in the championship singles draw.
Zach Farris defeated Davyn Williford of Hardin-Simmons in three sets 2-6, 7-5, 10-4 as he rallied for the victory.
Julian Lee took down Southwestern's Sebastian Herrera 6-4, 6-3 to move into the second round.
Both players had tight matches in the round of 32 before falling.
In a secondary draw,
Miles Grubbs notched two wins. He defeated Hunter Greene of Howard Payne in the first round 7-6(1), 6-2 before taking down East Texas Baptist's Payne Brock 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the draw.
Kenny Munoz had an opening-round win in the C draw over Xavier Cristan of Texas Lutheran 7-5, 6-4.
Westley Curtiss won twice in a consolation draw to advance to the final, while
John Lewis also notched a win in his consolation bracket.
Munoz and Lewis teamed up in doubles and advanced to the championship round of their draw. The duo knocked off Kyle Smith and Isaac Gutierrez of McMurry in the first round, 8-3, before defeating Diego Guzman and Jeremiah Hoover from St. Thomas, 8-1, in the semifinals. The tandem narrowly fell to Texas Lutheran's Eric Moninger and Logan Randall in the championship, 8-6.
