Dane Jones blasted his first-career homerun – a grand slam - in a loss to No. 25 UT Dallas Sunday at Conrad-Vernon Field.
The YellowJackets dropped to 1-5 on the season, including 0-3 in American Southwest Conference play, while the Comets moved to 3-0, 3-0.
The home fourth began rather pedestrian with two of the first three batters being retired.
Cameron Pfafman, who followed a single from
Ethan Wood, fought back from a 0-2 hole and worked a walk to load the bases. Jones deposited the 0-2 offering from Brett Huff over the fence in right center, giving LETU a 7-4 advantage.
With two outs in the top of the eighth, the YellowJackets cushion evaporated with a two RBI double, followed by a run-scoring single.
Kyle Maysonave fanned the next hitter, keeping the game knotted at 8-8.
UT Dallas sent 12 batters to the plate, registering eight runs on six hits, securing the series sweep.
Pfafman went 3 for 4, including a double, with an RBI and run scored.
Ethan Wood added a pair of hits and scored three times.
Hunter Miller doubled and
Dylan Cortes singled.
LETU utilized seven pitchers, while the Comets sent four to the mound. Freshman
Aman Patel made his second start for the YellowJackets, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in three innings of work. He fanned four.
Calvin Lopez relieved Patel and tossed three scoreless frames. He surrendered three hits and struck out one.
The YellowJackets embark on a seven-game road swing, beginning at Austin College Tuesday. First pitch in Sherman, Texas, is 6 p.m.
