Box Score 2 ALPINE, Texas – LETU swept by Sul Ross State in Friday's doubleheader at Kokernot Field.
The YellowJackets fell to 16-1 and 5-4, dropping to 3-9 overall, including 1-7 in American Southwest Conference play, while the Lobos move to 6-2, 6-2.
LETU capitalized on a pair of walks and an error to open the top of the fifth, which opened the scoring.
Cody Stanley drove in a pair when he laced a single into left, upping the margin to 3-0.
Dane Jones plated
Ethan Wood, who swiped second after reaching on a two-out single in the sixth, giving the guests a 4-0 cushion.
Stymied by
Raul Martinez through the first five innings – one hit, one walk and two errors – the Lobos finally got to him in the sixth. They sliced the margin in half with three extra-base hits to open the frame.
Martinez appeared to be out of the jam, retiring the next two, but a miscue made it 4-3.
Cade Smitherman replaced Martinez on the bump and the first batter he faced sent a liner into right, but Jones gunned down the tying run at the plate.
In the next frame, the hosts loaded the bases with no outs and moved in front with a pair of ground outs.
Anthony Ybarra accounted for two of the YellowJackets seven hits, while
Weston McKinley tallied a double. Wood, Jones, Stanley and
Cameron Pfafman recorded a knock each.
In the opener,
Dylan Cortes homered to left center in the third, plating the lone run for LETU in the opener. He finished with two of the team's four hits. Wood and
Devin Greaff finished with a base knock each.
Sul Ross State jumped out to a 5-0 after one inning. The Lobos added three in the second, six in the third and two more in the fifth.
The series concludes at 1 p.m. Saturday.
