LONGVIEW, Texas – Delayed a day to inclement weather, the LETU baseball team opens the season against Millsaps at Conrad Vernon Field Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for noon, with the series finale set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
Robin Harriss enters his 16
th season as head coach of the YellowJackets. The 2014 American Southwest Coast of the Year and 2011 Americna Southwest Conference East Division Coach of the Year guides a squad that features 20 freshmen or sophomores on the 40-man squad.
LETU posted a 15-22, mark last season, with 13-14 mark against Americna Southwest Conference foes. The young roster will look to graduate student
Weston McKinley and seniors
Raul Martinez,
Cameron Pfafman,
Kiernan Richards and
Jared Schurig for leadership.
On the mound, Martinez earned All-American Southwest Conference honors, finishing with a 5-3 record in 10 starts. He struck out a team high 56 batters and walked 22 in 50.1 innings of work. Schurig tossed 54.2 innings, fanning 47 and issuing 13 base-on-balls in 54.2 innings, while Richards boasted a 5:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
At the plate, McKinley scored 19 runs and drove in 22 more in 123 at bats. He hit
.260, slugged
.431, with a
.343 on-base percentage, tallying 32 hits, including seven doubles, one triple and four homers.
The Majors finished 10-23 overall in 2021, 8-16 in Southern Athletic Association play in 2020. Their top three offensive players from last season's team, with junior Sam Pitre, who earned All-SAA First Team and D3baseball.com All-South Region Third Team accolades, leading the way. He slashed
.391/.489/.582 in 34 games, registering 43 hits in 110 at-bats, including seven doubles, four triples and a pair of home runs. His 18 base-on-balls paced Millsaps, while his 22 runs and 21 RBIs were second on the squad.
