SAN ANTONIO, Texas --
Zach Farris and
Chase Rogers combined for five victories as the LeTourneau men's tennis team competed at the ITA Southwest Regional tournament in San Antonio over the weekend.
Farris advanced to the round of 16 in the main singles bracket, while Rogers won his first round match in the main draw before the tandem advanced to the second round of doubles play.
Farris went 2-1 in singles overall and advanced to the third round of the main draw. The sophomore opened with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Schreiner's Carson Kirk before downing Southwestern's Ashton Ellis in the second round by a 6-2, 7-5 final. In the third round, Farris took UT Dallas' Andres Gonzalez to three sets with tiebreakers in all three before falling 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 7-6(3). Gonzalez later advanced to the championship round.
Rogers played two three-set matches. Facing Trinity's Aashish Dhanani, Rogers outlasted his opponent with a 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 victory in the first round of the main draw. The freshman then took Hardin-Simmons' Justus Petersilie to three sets in a 6-1, 2-6, 10-8 loss.
Farris and Rogers teamed up in doubles action in the main draw and went 1-1 with a first round win over Luke Henley and Evan Pezirtzoglou of Austin College 8-0.
Alex Barrero went 3-1 in singles as he advanced to the championship round of the B draw consolation. Barrero had a pair of three-set victories over opponents from St. Thomas and Schreiner before defeating Concordia's Hunter Green 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals.Â
Liam Wedge also had a singles win over Concordia's Green as he took a 6-3, 1-6, 11-9 victory in the first round of the B draw bracket.
Barrero and
Timothy Black registered the second doubles win for LeTourneau with their 8-6 win over Howard Payne's Michael Woodard and Jonathan Villareal in the first round of the B draw.
