May Named Director of Track & Field and Cross Country

LONGVIEW, Texas -- Following a national search, LeTourneau has named Dillon May as its new Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, announced Vice President for Athletics Dr. Tim Sceggel.

May comes to LeTourneau after spending one season as the head cross country coach and director of track and field at NCAA Division III member Virginia Wesleyan.

"We are thrilled to add Dillon to our athletic department as a strong discipler who is committed to the faith formation that occurs within the Christian college context," said Sceggel. "As an accomplished runner himself, and a successful head coach, he has positioned himself for great success in the years ahead. When I first met Dillon as a graduate student a number of years ago I was impressed by his love for Christ, and excellence in coaching. Consequently, we are blessed to have him join us in Longview."

"I am beyond excited about coming to LeTourneau," said May. "I want to thank Dr. Steve Mason and Dr. Tim Sceggel for giving me this opportunity. I am excited to work under them as they have both made it clear to me that they plan to develop the track and field and cross country programs moving forward. They are determined to provide us with the resources and tools necessary to be a highly competitive program within our conference and on a national scale. Combining that with the intentional approach LeTourneau takes with faith integration in athletics, it was everything I was looking for in a program that I wanted to lead."

In his one season at Virginia Wesleyan, May's teams were strong on the track. He had three NCAA qualifiers in track, including two All-Americans. The Marlins accumulated 34 All-ODAC performances, six track All-Region honorees, and set multiple program records and top-10 program performances.

May was also responsible for hosting meets, including two outdoor meets and one cross country meet.

Before his role at Virginia Wesleyan, May spent two years as a graduate assistant coach at Messiah where he assisted with all aspects of the track and cross country programs. During his time at Messiah, May helped coach three NCAA champions, four All-Americans, and seven NCAA qualifiers.

May will take over a LeTourneau program that sent two athletes to the NCAA Championships in the outdoor season.

"The beauty of track and field and cross country are how objective they are as sports. It's just times and numbers. You either have the mark to qualify or you don't. For me, though, it's more than times and numbers," noted May. "I want to make sure my coaching staff uses the time we have with our team to pour in and invest in the individuals that we're coaching to be their best in competition. This team will be one that is both highly competitive and seeks to honor God in everything that we do. Put simply: our goal is to win. That's what makes us an intercollegiate team. To win the conference championship, and to put together a team that will pursue a national championship.

"Our purpose, however, is to bring honor and glory to God. That comes from our core values, the standards that we as a program hold ourselves to, and how we operate as a team. Combining this goal and this purpose is critical to the success of our program."

May will begin looking to fill out his rosters heading into the 2024-25 season and beyond.

"The best teams are composed of highly motivated, highly supportive student-athletes who want to help their teammates succeed and are driven to work hard every chance they get," said May. "I am looking for student-athletes who will be committed to doing everything they can to make their teammates around them better and bring excitement and excellence to practice and competition day-in and day-out."

May was a five-time letterwinner as a cross country and track athlete at NCAA Division I member Montana. He earned Big Sky All-Academic five times and graduated with a degree in mathematics in 2019.

He spent two years as a high school math teacher and coach at Erie High School in Colorado before attending Messiah to earn his master's degree in intercollegiate athletics leadership. May completed his master's degree in 2023.

"I have had the incredible opportunity of working with teams where being a member of the track and field and cross country programs was a truly transformative experience; where being on the team helped student-athletes grow in their sense of purpose, in their relationship with Christ, and was an enriching part of their time in college," continued May. "I want the student-athletes on my team to have a transformational experience, helping them not only to succeed in the field of competition, but to serve as a launch pad for success beyond athletics and in their Christian faith. One of my favorite passages of scripture is Colossians 3:23-24: 'Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.'"

May and his wife, Hannah, also have a long history working with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Hannah May currently serves on staff with FCA.

May holds a Level I coaching certification with USA Track & Field.
