BELTON, Texas -- The LeTourneau men's tennis team opened the fall portion of its season over the weekend and notched 22 victories at the Crusader Invitational in Belton.
Six different players recorded two singles wins each and the YellowJackets won two bracket titles.
Timothy Black,
Hayden Harry,
Jackson Hix,
Diego Maldonado,
Brayden Money, and
Josiah Nellis all had two wins each in their singles bracket draws. Maldonado took the title in the G Draw as he got by Howard Payne's Mike Woodard 6-1, 6-3 in the first round and Aaron Griffin of Concordia Texas in the semifinals in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. Maldonado took the draw title in a default.
Black and Harry both reached the finals of their draws. Black took down Howard Payne's Robert Aguero by a 6-1, 6-3 final in the first round before a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dallas' James Elliott in round two. Harry notched a 7-6(5), 6-4 win in the first round over Texas Lutheran's JT Figueroa and a 6-1, 5-7, 10-4 win over Hunter Kemball-Cook (St. Thomas) in the semifinals.
In doubles, Harry and Maldonado went 3-0 en route to a title in the E Draw. The tandem opened with an 8-5 win over Concordia's Hunter Green and Jude Bruce before knocking off Aguero and River Prado of Howard Payne, 8-5, in the semifinals. In the title match, Harry and Maldonado defeated McMurry's Khoen Gregory and Jack Greenwald, 8-3.
Nellis and
Westley Curtiss both advanced to the semifinals in their draws and then played each other in the consolation final with Nellis winning 6-3, 6-3. Hix and
Kale Crenshaw also won their first round matches.
Zach Farris,
Grayson Cavel,
Andrew Reiman, and
Fernando Vazquez all notched wins in singles play.
UP NEXT
LeTourneau will compete at the ITA Southwest Regional tournament on Sept. 26-28 in Abilene, Texas.
