YellowJackets Play to a Draw at Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD - The LeTourneau YellowJacket men's soccer team hit the road on Friday afternoon as they took on Howard Payne Yellow Jackets in a battle of Jackets. LeTourneau took an early lead, but Howard Payne responded in the second half and ultimately, the game ended in a draw.

Howard Payne (3-8-2, 1-7-1 ASC) got the majority of shots throughout the first half, but junior goalkeeper Anthony Martinez was terrific in the first half, picking up six saves as he was a key early on.

The Jackets (2-11-1, 1-7-1 ASC) then came through in the 33rd minute as junior Eric Reyes fired a gorgeous shot from the top of the 18 and into the back of the net to give LeTourneau the 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Howard Payne responded almost immediately to start the second half with a goal from Jacob Moore in the 47th minute.

LeTourneau then went on the attack as they looked for a go ahead goal, outshooting Howard Payne, 12-8. However, the YellowJackets could not find a goal and the game went into overtime.

Even after losing a man due to a red card during extra time, LeTourneau held strong and settled for the draw. They got a great perfromance from their defense including the likes of junior Sam Lopez-Hidalgo, sophomore Nick Novak, sophomore Carlos Guevara, freshman Jonathan Witt, and sophomore Xavier Scarlett. Martinez picked up eight saves.

For Reyes, it was his first goal of the season as he led the way offensively. Junior Hunter Hembrough had five shots on the afternoon while Reyes added four.

The YellowJackets return to action on Saturday afternoon as they take on Hardin-Simmons on the road at 3 p.m.
