Box Score LONGVIEW - On a chilly night at Joyce Family Village, the LeTourneau YellowJacket men's soccer team took on the Schreiner Mountaineers in ASC action on Friday night. LeTourneau struggled to get much offense going on the evening as Schreiner took a 2-0 win.
Schreiner (7-8, 7-4 ASC) struck quickly in the first three minutes of the first half as Ryan Hernandez scored after a string of deflections off the post. The Mountaineers were able to hold off any sort of YellowJacket attacks all throughout the first half as they took their 1-0 lead into the break.
LeTourneau (2-13-1, 1-9-1 ASC) came out in the second half determined to find an equalizer as they were able to get a corner kick and shots from junior Hunter Hembrough and freshman Israel Madrid that missed wide.
The Mountaineers responded with their second goal of the match in the 74th minute thanks to beautiful passing that led to the foot of Ivan Benitez who put it home. The YellowJackets aggressively made a move to try and get back in the match, but could not get it done.
Hembrough led the way offensively with three shots on the night while Madrid and junior Eric Reyes added two shots each. LeTourneau played well defensively for the most part as they got good performances from junior Sam Lopez-Hidalgo and sophomore Xavier Scarlett.
Freshman Joe Barker got the start in goal and picked up five saves while junior Anthony Martinez appeared in the second half and made three saves.
The Jackets return to action tomorrow night as they play in their final game of the season against Texas Lutheran. The game is slated to start at 6 p.m. following the women's soccer match.
