Box Score

LONGVIEW - The LeTourneau YellowJacket men's soccer team competed in their final game of the season at home against Texas Lutheran in front of a raucous home crowd on Saturday evening.

On a night that generally celebrates the senior's last home game, the YellowJackets did not have any seniors trot out to the field for their last contest, but finished the season off with a bang as they defeated the Bulldogs 2-0.

From the start, LeTourneau (3-13-1, 2-9-1 ASC) came out with a purpose as they gained control and really got the crowd into the game early on.

In the 14th minute, sophomore Nick Novak scooted up the sidelines and sent a perfect pass to the opposite post where freshman Isreal Madrid awaited as he put home the first goal of the game to give the YellowJackets a 1-0 lead early on.

Three minutes later, the Bulldogs (6-8-2, 4-6-2 ASC) looked for a quick answer, but junior Anthony Martinez made a terrific save to keep the score as is.

Defense was the key for the Jackets as the back line of junior Sam Lopez-Hidalgo, sophomore Xavier Scarlett, sophomore Carlos Guevara, and freshman Jonathan Witt were all terrific throughout the game as they took anyway any Texas Lutheran opportunities and made it easy for their goalkeeper.

LeTourneau came out of the second half with the 1-0 lead, but Texas Lutheran looked to even the score with two shots in the first five minutes of the second half. The Bulldogs continued to attack aggressively, but Martinez and the tough Jacket defense kept sending away the Bulldogs empty handed.

In the 73rd minute, freshman Blake Pickett sent a beautiful cross into the box that found the head Novak who put the game away with his first goal of the season and gave the Jackets a 2-0 lead to the delight of the LeTourneau faithful.

It was all that was needed as Martinez picked up his second clean sheet of the season and added an impressive five saves to his night. Freshman Mario Lopez led the attack with five shots while Novak added three. The Jackets also got great performances from a trio of juniors in Eric Reyes, Hunter Hembrough, and Josh Bishop.
