Jackets Streak Comes to a Halt at the Hands of Texas Lutheran

Box Score

SEGUIN - The LeTourneau YellowJacket men's basketball team came into Texas Lutheran on Saturday night with a three game winning streak, but could not keep it going as a tough start proved to be costly in a 61-56 loss.

Senior Deitrich Williams got things started with a bang, draining a three pointer and then nailing a step back jumper to put LeTourneau up 5-0. From there, Texas Lutheran (2-6, 2-3 ASC) went on an astonishing 20-1 run in the next 10 minutes to take a 20-6 lead with about eight minutes to go in the first half.

For the YellowJackets (4-6, 3-3 ASC) it was a mix of dreadful shooting along with turnovers that were costly. LeTourneau knew that if they wanted any shot in this game, they had to make a run before the half ended.

Down 22-11, they did just that with a 7-0 run thanks to a three pointer from sophomore Josh Thornton, free throws from freshman Chris Hynes, and a layup from freshman Ladaria Brown which included a moster blocked shot.

The Bulldogs finished the half with three free throws and took a 25-18 lead into half.

Coming out of the second half, Texas Lutheran started it off with a three poitner and continued to extend their lead to as many as 14 to start the second half and maintained their lead.

With the score at 47-33 with 9:37 to go in the game, the Jackets made a huge push thanks to layups from junior Justin Jones, senior Kendrae Carter, and Brown to cut the deficit back down to six.

However, with so many fouls called on both side throughout the game, it seemed like LeTourneau's offense could never quite get in a consistent rhythm as they inched closer at time, but would then fall back behind even more.

After the big run by the Jackets, they never seemed to rebound as Texas Lutheran was able to push it back to 10 and was able to withstand a late rally by LeTourneau in the final minute to take the victory.

Offense was a struggle with D. Williams leading the way at 10 points. Brown added nine points and picked up eight to go with eight rebounds. Junior Chad Williams had three blocks on the evening.

LeTourneau shot 5-for-20 from the field in the first half, but picked their percentage up to 40% for the game from the fied. However, the biggest disappointment was at the free throw line, where LeTourneau shot 16-for-29 which proved to be extremely costly.
