Box Score SHREVEPORT, La. - With two seconds remaining, Jairus Browning of Centenary hit a go-ahead three pointer to push Centenary by LeTourneau 57-54 on Monday afternoon at the Gold Dome. For the Jackets, it was a heartbreaking loss in a game where they struggled to get any offense going.
The Jackets started things hot with a 5-0 lead as freshman Ladaria Brown buried a three followed by a beautiful mid-range jumper off a sick crossover from senior Deitrich Williams. Centenary responded with eight straight points of their own before sophomore Josh Thornton broke the run with a three of his own to tie the game.
LeTourneau found themselves struggling offensively throughout the first half, despite playing good defense. No shots were wanting to fall for the Jackets and with five minutes remaining in the half, the Jackets were only 5-for-23 from the floor.
However, LeTourneau finished the half strong, scoring nine of the final 12 points including a buzzer beating three-pointer by Williams to cut the deficit to 25-23 going into the break.
The Jackets came out in the second half determined to to take control of the lead. After falling behind early in the half, the Jackets, down by six, used a 10-0 run at the 13:37 mark to take control of the lead at 41-37. Even though the Jackets struggled shooting, Thornton remained consistent throughout the contest and came through with huge shots all throughout the game.
Centenary came back and tied the game at 44 as both teams battled back and forth throughout the second half. The Jackets went up by four after free throws by Brown and a layup from junior Chad Williams, but the Gents fired back with a three to make it a one point game.
Each team exchanged one free throw as LeTourneau stayed on top by one, but Browning made the first of his two huge three pointers with 1:35 to go to give the Gents the 52-50 lead. Thornton responded with a beautiful drive and laid in it to tie it up, but Centenary took the lead back with 31 seconds to go thanks to a layup from Donovan Williams.
D. Williams took the game into his hands and drove hard down the lane and drew a foul with 10 seconds to go and two free throws needed to tie. With ice in his veins, Williams drained both free throws to even the game.
But good fortune was not on the Jackets side as Browning hit the three with three seconds left and Williams desparationg half court shot went hard off the backboard to end the game and give Centenary a thrilling win.
Thornton was clutch in this game, shooting 7-for-12 with 16 points. D. Williams added 12 on the night to go with four rebounds and two assists. The Jackets three leading scorers, junior Justin Jones, Brown, and C. Williams combined to only score nine points on 2-of-19 shooting.
LeTourneau as a whole struggled, shooting only 33% from the field. However, they did shoot well from downtown, going 44%. A big improvement was turnovers as LeTourneau only committed 10 and forced 13.
The Jackets return to action on Thursday as they welcome in the Sul Ross St. Lobos. It is the first ASC home game this season as is set to tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
