LONGVIEW, Texas – LeTourneau men's soccer posted its first victory of the season Tuesday night as the YellowJackets defeated Centenary, 2-1, at LETU Soccer Field.
"It feels really good," LeTourneau men's soccer head coach Matthew Haesecke said. "We hadn't scored all season, we were able to get two goals, and battled back from having them tie it up to get the win. It means a lot to the team, and I think it's going to give us a lot of confidence moving forward."
LeTourneau got things going in the 16th minute when Edwin Raudales (Hurst, Texas) delivered a perfect corner kick to Jay Huemoeller (Oakland, Calif.), who rose up to head it in and give the YellowJackets a 1-0 advantage.
Later in the opening half, Centenary's Spencer Nickerson stole a pass, took it the distance, and scored unassisted to even the score at 1-1.
The score remained tied until the 52nd minute, when Raudales crossed the ball from midfield to Mario Lopez (Longview, Texas), who headed it into the net for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
LeTourneau outshot Centenary on the night, 18-10, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Anthony Martinez (Jasper, Texas) played all 90 minutes in goal for the YellowJackets, making three saves and allowing just one goal. Lopez finished the night with six total shots, including three on goal. Huemoeller and Hunter Hembrough (Longview, Texas) had two shots on goal apiece, and Raudales had two assists for LETU.
LeTourneau is back in action at home Thursday night, as the YellowJackets welcome Wiley College to LETU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
