Baseball Stomps Mountaineers to Complete the Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KERRVILLE - The LeTourneau YellowJacket baseball team came back to Schreiner University Field on Saturday afternoon, looking to complete a sweep in their ASC Crossover matchup. The Jackets did that in dominating fashion, defeating Schreiner 7-0 (7) and 12-1 to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Senior Rhett Bohannon led Game One off with walk followed by a triple by junior Chris Bertram to score Bohannon and take a 1-0 lead. After a pair of walks, freshman Ryan Bertram was hit by pitch to score another run. After an out was recorded, senior Brent Sellers ripped a single to score two runs and take a 4-0 lead.

Junior Dustin Varnado drove in a run followed by Bohannon reaching on an error as LeTourneau took a 6-0 lead after just a half an inning.

It was all junior Curt Copeland needed as he shut down the Mountaineers, not allowing anything more than a single and walking only one batter with his lead.

The Jackets tacked on another run on a groundout by Bohannon to go up 7-0 and cruised to a win to take the series.

Copeland (2-0) got the complete game shutout (seven innings), allowing only five hits and striking out five.

Offensively, Varnado was 2-for-2 with a RBI while freshman Dillon Yates added a 2-for-3 day with a double. Sellers and Bohannon each added two RBIs in the win.

In the second game, neither team could put any runs on the board through two innings as freshman Josh Gimre put the Mountaineers down despite threatening at times.

Sellers led the third off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. One batter later, junior Bryce Griffin drove him home for a 1-0 lead. After a single by C. Bertram and Yates reaching on an error, junior Garrett Methvin grounded out to first to plate another run and take a 2-0 lead.

Gimre continued to work well on the mound, pitching out of tough situations and keeping the Jackets on top.

LeTourneau responded in the fifth and broke the game wide open. After Griffin doubled, the next two batters reached on an error and walk. Junior Matt Leftwich singled to score two followed by a two RBI triple by R. Bertram. Sellers and Griffin each singled home runs to increase the lead to 8-0.

The Jackets cruised their way to their third straight victory, getting two more RBIs from Leftwich on a homerun and RBIs from R. Bertram and freshman Austin Harris.

Gimre (1-0) earned his first win of the season, pitching 5.1 innings while only allowing one runs and striking out three. Jordan Price, Jack Van Saders, and Andrew Smith all saw relief action and kept their run count at zero.

Offensively, Griffin was unbelievable, going 5-for-6 from the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored. Leftwich added a 2-for-3 day with four RBIs and R. Bertram was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. The Jackets hit two total triples in this game from R. Bertram and Harris and three on the entire day.

The Jackets return to Conrad-Vernon Field on Tuesday as they welcome in Austin College for a weekday game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and Live Stats will be provided through Stretch Internet.
