Box Score TYLER - The LeTourneau YellowJacket baseball team hit the road to take on the 13th ranked Texas-Tyler Patriots in American Southwest Conference action. A two run seventh inning was all the Patriots needed to get back the Jackets, taking a 4-3 victory on Friday evening.
Senior Rhett Bohannon led things off with a single and proceeded to steal second base to start the game. Junior Bryce Griffin moved him to third and junior Garrett Methvin drove him in with a RBI groundout for the 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Ryan Bertram led the second off with a double to right and advanced to third on an error by the right fielder. Freshman Dillon Yates drove him in with a RBI groundout as the Jackets held a 2-0 lead.
The Patriots (27-8, 10-3 ASC) got two runs back in the bottom of the second to tie the game at two. From there, freshman Josh Gimre was terrific, keeping the score tied throughout the next four innings. Gimre painted the corners very well and kept the Patriot batters off balanced.
The Jackets (18-13, 8-8 ASC) struggled at the plate though, as Chance Cotton was equally as impressive on the mound.
UT-Tyler got two runs in the bottom of the seventh to chase Gimre and take a 4-2 advantage. Junior Jordan Price came into the game and shut down the Patriots to keep the score as is.
LeTourneau got one back in the eighth, thanks to a RBI groundout from Bohannon to make it a one run game, but Derek Miller was able to close things out in the ninth and hang on for the win.
Gimre pitched 6.1, allowing four runs off six hits and striking out two. Price pitched 1.2 innings, allowing no runs off two hits and striking out one batter.
Offensively, Bohannon led the way going 1-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Griffin and Bertram added a pair of 1-for-4 days while junior Dustin Varnado and Yates were 1-for-3.
LeTourneau will return to the field tomorrow afternoon as they will look to take two straight from the Patriots. First pitch of a doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. with junior Curt Copeland and sophomore Cody Whitley expected to start on the bump.
