Box Score The LeTourneau University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to host Texas Lutheran on Friday in Seguin to begin the 2013 season.
The Yellow Jackets (0-1) outshot the host Bulldogs by an 18 to 8 margin including a decisive 11 to 4 margin on shots on goal.
Texas Lutheran (1-0) scored in the eighth minute when Isaac Lopez converted a penalty kick for the early advantage. The scoreboard reflected a TLU advantage but it was an aggressive attack for LeTourneau throughout the contest.
With the early deficit, the Yellow Jackets sought out to tie the contest. Sophomore
Mario Lopez had shots in the 19
th and 21
st minute, respectively that were saved by Bulldogs' goalkeeper Jonathan Michael. Later in the half, a shot by senior
Hunter Hembrough hit the crossbar in the 41
st minute to keep LeTourneau off the scoreboard.
The intensity carried over into the second half for LeTourneau as they continued out possess and outshoot the host Bulldogs. However, Texas Lutheran was able to add to its lead when Lalo Ramirez headed in a corner kick in the 81
st minute.
The Yellow Jackets got its first goal of the season, in the 87
th minute, when they took advantage of a punt by
Anthony Martinez that was flicked on by sophomore
Israel Madrid to freshman
Martin Pflaum, who would capitalize on a one-on-one play with the Bulldogs' keeper to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Despite with just over three minutes to play, LeTourneau continued its aggressive offensive play but unable to tie the contest in the defeat.
Next, the Yellow Jackets will continue their eight-match stretch to open the season away when they face Schreiner on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Kerrville.
