Box Score 2 SHERMAN, Texas -- LeTourneau University's volleyball team checked off the first two priorities on the agenda Friday after sweeping Paul Quinn College, 25-23, 25-14, 25-8, and overcoming Nebraska Wesleyan University, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-20, on the first day of the season at the Austin College Invitational.
The YellowJackets (2-0) hit .384 in the opener with Paul Quinn before putting together a .203 attack percentage against Nebraska Wesleyan. LETU held Paul Quinn to .184 and Nebraska Wesleyan to .134.
Kianna Crow had 17 kills, 10 digs and hit a whopping .593 in the opener, and
Taylor Smith banged 18 kills, had four aces and hit at a .390 attack rate in the nightcap. Crow added 15 kills and 19 digs against Wesleyan, and
Mikayla Thomas had nine kills in each match, while combining for 10 blocks on the day. She had seven blocks against Paul Quinn. Smith had seven kills and nine digs in the first match.
Cam Taylor finished with 32 digs and three of the Jackets' 10 aces in the win over Wesleyan. She had seven digs and three aces in the sweep.
Natalie Davenport had 31 assists in the four-set win and 18 in the sweep.
LeTourneau trailed NWU, 19-15, in the second set before Crow silenced a 3-0 run when she banged down one of Davenport's setups.
Lexie Welton's kill pulled LETU within 21-20 before Nicole Gonzales answered for the Prairie Wolves. An attack error put Nebraska Wesleyan ahead 23-20, but the YellowJackets went on a 5-0 run highlighted by four kills from Smith, including the last three points, to tie the match at a set apiece.
Thomas gave the YellowJackets a 14-8 lead in the third set when she hammered down a ball. Two hitting errors by the Prairie Wolves extended LETU's lead to 17-10. Smith authored back-to-back kills for a 20-11 LeTourneau lead before an ace by NWU's Nyah Chambers and a LeTourneau hitting error pulled the Prairie Wolves within five. Wesleyan cut it to 24-21 on a kill by Cora Svoboda, but Crow's putaway sealed the set, giving LeTourneau a 2-1 lead.
The YellowJackets converted 16 of 22 sideouts in the third set for 72 percent.
With Gonzales serving, LETU broke a 17-17 tie in the fourth set when Smith put down a kill. A Prairie Wolves setting error and attack error, and a kill by Thomas moved the Jackets ahead by four. Chambers' ace pulled NWU within 21-19, but LeTourneau reeled off four of the last five points to ice it.
Renee Martinez's ace and kills by Thomas and Davenport down the stretch put a cap on the match.
It was a contest that featured 29 ties and 13 lead changes.
The YellowJackets meet the University of St. Thomas 11 a.m. Saturday and host Austin College at 5 p.m. to close out the weekend.
