LONGVIEW – LeTourneau University men's basketball's Nate West was named the D3hoops.com National Player of the Year.

He also was named First Team All-American by D3hoops.com.

A 5-10 senior guard from Houston, West ranked fourth in NCAA Division III in scoring (28.6), first in total assists (208), second in assists per game (7.2) and second in triple-doubles (3). He also led the YellowJackets in rebounds per game (7.9).

"The biggest thing is bringing the light to my school," West said of the honor. "It feels good with all the support we get."

He set school records for points in a season (830), points in a game (67), assists in a career (534), free throws made in a season (184), free throws made in a career (498), free throw percentage in a career (.856), three-point field goals in a career (361), three-pointers in a season (124) and steals in a career (182). He tied the school career scoring mark of 2,393 points.

"We had our team goals, and coach (Dan Miller) helped me come up with my own individual goals to do what we needed to do as a team," West said. "They were honestly really big goals because we had a really young team. "

He led the American Southwest Conference in scoring and assists. West was named a First Team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He is LeTourneau University's first NCAA Division III All-American in school history.

In the last three weeks, he scored 47 points, 67 points and 51 points in three different games. His 67 points were the most in Division III this season.

"My teammates just kept feeding me, and I just happened to get hot," West said.

The YellowJackets qualified for the national tournament for the second time in school history, winning the ASC Tournament Championship for the first time in program history.

"It's obviously our biggest accomplishment because it's something our school had never done before I got there," West said of qualifying for the national tournament.

West was also named the NABC Division III Player of the Year.
