Box Score MARSHALL, Texas --
Syed Zain scored in the 85th minute to cut the deficit in half, but the LeTourneau men's soccer team could not complete the comeback effort in a 2-1 loss at East Texas Baptist on Saturday night.
The loss dropped LeTourneau to 4-5-4 overall on the year and 0-3-2 in ASC play. East Texas Baptist moved to 6-6-1 and 1-4 in league action.
After a scoreless first half, East Texas Baptist struck for two goals in the first five minutes of the second half. Matthew Dieb put the host Tigers up 1-0 in the 48th minute with a goal as he cleaned up a chance after a deflected ball in the box.Â
Just over two minutes later, the Tigers scored again with Luke Hunsinger's goal that made it 2-0 in the 50th minute.
As has been the case all season, LeTourneau did not back down from the challenge and the YellowJackets put pressure on ETBU over the final 30 minutes of play. That push finally paid off in the 85th minute for LeTourneau.
On a ball into the box, ETBU keeper Tristan Whelchel could not handle the it cleanly and
Russell Gray took advantage and slid a pass to Zain in the middle of the box. Zain converted on the opportunity from short distance to get the YellowJackets on the board.
The goal was Zain's second of the year, while Gray notched his second assist of the season.
LeTourneau had one more look in the final moments as a bounding ball made its way to the box, but Whelchel was able to corral it just in front of a hard-charging Gray to seal the win for ETBU.
ETBU held a 17-10 edge in total shots as Bruno Palmieri and Justus Crow had three attempts each. Four players -- including Zain, Gray,
Emad Mohamed, and
Keaton Johnson -- had two shots apiece for LeTourneau.
Raul Torrez made six saves for the YellowJackets.
