SUWANEE, Ga. -- Coming off his first collegiate medalist honors,
Trey Cates was named the SCAC Golfer of the Week, announced the league on Wednesday.
It is the first career weekly award for Cates. He is the fourth different LeTourneau golfer to collect honors this season.
A junior from Portland, Texas, Cates delivered a record-breaking performance and the LeTourneau men's golf team captured the Linda Lowery Invitational title at the par-72 Teravista Golf Club on Tuesday. Cates set a program record for a 36-hole tournament by finishing 7-under with his 137 (68-69) and captured his first collegiate medalist honor. The junior opened with a round of 4-under, 68 on Monday before finishing with a 3-under, 69 on Tuesday. Cates was nearly flawless on Monday with six birdies and only one bogey, while he carded five birdies on Tuesday. His 11 birdies for the tournament was tied for the most in the field.
LeTourneau finished with a 1-under, 575 (286-289) in the 36-hole tournament to place 18 shots ahead of second-place St. Thomas.Â
On the year, Cates is third on the team with a 74.06 scoring average and has two top-10 finishes. Cates has eight rounds at or better than par across his 16 rounds played.
LeTourneau hosts the Goliath Compression Invitational on March 30-31 at Pine Dunes Resort & Golf Club in Frankston, Texas.
