Box Score 2 CLINTON, Miss. - The LeTourneau YellowJacket baseball team returned to Frierson Field on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Mississippi College Choctaws. LeTourneau evened the series with a 4-2 win in game one before dropping the second contest, 9-3 later that afternoon.
In the first game, sophomore Cody Whitley got the start in the seven inning game and was very effective, picking up his fourth win of the season.
The Choctaws (8-12, 2-4 ASC) scratched a run across the board in the second inning, but LeTourneau (11-7, 2-4 ASC) got all they needed in the top of the third. Senior Brent Sellers led the inning off with a single followed by a fielder's choice resulting in everyone being safe to make it two on and one out.
Junior Bryce Griffin got the scoring with a RBI single followed a RBI double from junior Garrett Methvin. Sophomore Ryan Bertram reached on an error to score another run and junior Chris Bertram made it 4-1 with a RBI double.
It was all Whitley needed as he came up clutch the rest of the way. Despite the Choctaws getting runners on base in every inning including the tying run on first in the seventh, Whitley pitched out of it and led the Jackets to a 4-2 victory. He pitched a complete game, allowing six hits on the afternoon and only one earned run while striking out five.
Offensively, Methvin was terrific, going 3-for-4 with a RBI while senior Rhett Bohannon went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Sellers was 1-for-2 with a run scored while Griffin and the Bertram brothers each had a RBI.
In the second game, Griffin led things off by reaching on an error followed by a walk to Methvin. R. Bertram doubled to right center to score two runs and advanced to third on an error and C. Bertram drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left to take a 3-0 lead after one.
However, that is all the offense LeTourneau could produce the rest of the day while Mississippi College got a pair of runs in the second and third for a 4-3 lead. The Choctaws then opened it up in the later innings to take the 9-3 victory.
Sophomore Caleb Pritchett took the loss for the Jackets to go to 0-1 on the season. Junior Josh Gimre saw action in relief for the Jackets.
Griffin led the offensive attack, going 2-for-4 with a run scored while R. Bertram had two RBIs. Methvin's 13 game hitting streak came to a close, going 0-for-3 though scoring a run.
LeTourneau will travel to Pineville on Tuesday for a weekday matchup against the Louisiana College Wildcats. These two met in ASC action last weekend and this game will be a non-conference matchup with first pitch at 6 p.m.
