Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BELTON - The LeTourneau YellowJacket baseball team concluded their season on Saturday afternoon as they squared off against the Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru on the road. The Cru used a game winning hit in the seventh to take a 3-2 (7) in the first game, but the Jackets responded with a dominating 16-5 (7) to win the series.

In the first game, sophomore Cody Whitley and Chance Ryan of UMHB squared off on the mound as they shut both teams down throughout the first three innings.

The Cru (20-19, 10-8 ASC) struck first in the fourth as an unearned run came across the plate on a fielder's choice for the 1-0 lead.

LeTourneau (22-16, 8-10 ASC) came up in the sixth and got a pair of runs on an error by the pitcher. Bertram scored on a balk by the pitcher and then senior Jay Lutz scored on a wild pitch to take a 2-1 lead.

However, Mary Hardin-Baylor got a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh to take the win and even the series. Whitley pitched six complete innings allowing only one earned run on seven hits and struck out six. Junior Jordan Price was tabbed with the loss in the seventh.

Offensively, Lutz was 2-for-2 with a run scored while junior Dustin Varnado was 1-for-1. Bertram added the only other hit for the Jackets in the first game.

It was a different story for the offense in game two as Varnado led the inning off with a double followed by a walk to senior Rhett Bohannon. After a line drive out produced a double play, Bohannon stole second and junior Garrett Methvin drove in a run for a 1-0 lead.

UMHB got one back in the first, but the Jackets got two in the third thanks to RBIs from Bohannon and Methvin and then broke the game wide open in the fourth.

Freshman Dillon Yates led the inning off with a walk followed by a one out single from junior Bryce Griffin. Senior Brent Sellers came to the plate and laced a double into the right center gap to score one. Varnado and Bohannon each had RBI singles and went on to steal bases while Bertram drew a walk to load them. Methvin came to the plate and tattoed a double to left to score two more.

After a walk to Lutz, Yates grounded out to score a run and sophomore Jon Lewis drove a two RBI single up the middle to make it 11-1.

The Cru got a couple of runs to cut the deficit to 11-5 in the fifth, but a sacrifice fly by Lewis pushed the lead back to 12-6.

From there, the Jackets added four runs in the seventh and ended the game with three outs for the elmination win and won their final series of the season, 16-5 (7). Freshman Josh Gimre picked up his second win of the season.

LeTourneau exploded for 18 hits including a 4-for-5, four RBI day from Methvin and a 4-for-4, two double, two run scored day from Sellers. Varnado completed a terrific week by going 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored as he was 7-for-10 for the weekend. Lewis had a career day as well, going 2-for-4 with five RBIs and a run scored. The Jackets also had four stolen bases included three from Bohannon.

The Jackets conclude their season despite a solid 22-16 record. They will be back in action in the offseason this fall as they will prepare for a run for a postseason in 2014.

LeTourneau thanks the four seniors who are graduating for their hard work both on and off the field throughout their careers. The four seniors are Rhett Bohannon, Jay Lutz, Will Bunker, and Brent Sellers
