Career Night by Justin Jones Leads LeTourneau Men's Basketball to 64-61 Win Over Howard Payne

Box Score LeTourneau University junior Aaron Frizell hit a 3 pointer with 18 seconds to go to propel the men's basketball team to a 64-61 win over Howard Payne University on Thursday evening in Solheim Arena.

LeTourneau (4-14, 3-12 ASC) was led by senior Justin Jones, who scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for his 13th double double of the season in the win. The 32 points by the Waxahachie native is the most since he scored 31 against Ozarks, last year on February 14th.

It was a solid all-around contribution by LeTourneau in the win. Sophomore Ladaria Brown added nine points and eight rebounds to go with three assists and two steals. Frizell finished with seven points, four rebounds and four assists; plus, sophomore Chris Hynes had six points, six assists and four rebounds to contribute to the win.

Howard Payne (5-19, 5-16) was led by the 22-point effort from Brandon Gould. He was joined in double digits by Quelan Lancaster – who added 16 points and 14 rebounds – and Donovan Ford, who scored 11 in the defeat.

The game saw 14 lead changes and the score tied 12 times. Frizell put LeTourneau up 59-57 with 2:14 to play when he made 1 of 2 free throws. Then, Lancaster tied the game for the 11th time when he made a jumper with 1:45 to play; however, LeTourneau went back to Jones to tie the game when he made a layup with 1:19 to go.

Then, Howard Payne tied the game for the 12th and final time when Lancaster made a jumper with 48 seconds to go. After a timeout, LeTourneau set up for the game-winning shot with 36 seconds to play. The ball remained on the perimeter as Frizell set his feet behind the arc with 18 seconds to go after a pass from Chris Hynes for the game-winning shot.

Frizell was involved also in the defensive end as a game-tying 3 pointer attempt with 13 seconds to play by HPU came up short and he came down with the rebound. However, LeTourneau was not in the bonus. Two fouls later, HPU fouled Hynes, who missed a pair of free throws, but he alertly grabbed the rebound. After a missed layup, HPU came down with the rebound and had one last chance on a 3 pointer by Joshua Cormier that came up short to allow LeTourneau to come away with the win.

With the win, LeTourneau snaps a four-game losing streak to head into Saturday's regular season home finale against Sul Ross State at 3 p.m.
